Philosophy Tutors London

Philosophy literally comes from the Greek and translates to ‘the love of wisdom.’ Studying the subject is an enriching experience and one that teaches you to use logic and reason in order to deconstruct the ways in which humans experience the world. It exercises skills of critical thinking, clear writing, and logical analysis and exposes students to inspiring figures throughout history and the contemporary philosophical landscape.

Plato once said: ‘Philosophy begins in wonder’. People who choose to study this subject have an acute sense curiosity about the world in which we live. Broadly speaking, philosophy seeks to answer the perennial questions such as: Is morality relative? What is art? Do animals have rights? What is consciousness? Do we really have free will?

Because of its challenging nature and undefined career path, students tend to be among the most devoted and passionate for their subject. The main reason to study this subject is that you find intrinsic value in reflection and contemplation.

Philosophy can be broken down into various sub disciplines which include:

  • Ethics – Can morality exist without religion?
  • Metaphysics – the theory of being. Where does our consciousness go when we die?
  • Epistemology – the theory of knowledge. Is truth relative or an opinion?
  • Politics and Law – Is the preservation of culture a good reason to limit immigration?
  • Science – Is Mathematics the same as logic?

Many of these questions have been asked by humans for millennia, passed down through the ages and finding their roots with the Greeks. But progress continues to be made in understanding many of them, and active new contributions are happening all the time.

Life beyond Study

A Philosophy degree requires a lot of time dedicated to deep thinking, and perhaps this has earned Philosophers the reputation for being unsuited for the fast-paced corporate world. But if that’s the direction you’re thinking of heading in, fear not. There are many practical reasons to get a philosophy qualification as well. Despite the abstract nature of the questions that it asks, the tools you gain from studying it are highly pragmatic and studying these theories and writings will prepare you with skills that are both highly marketable and transferrable. It endows you with the kind of creative problem solving, careful thinking, critical analysis and persuasive writing that is valued in many different areas of work, and it is also excellent preparation for further study.
