What does Finance mean?

The study and practice of Finance is centred around number and money, relating to the analysing, equating, organising and managing of money, statistics and data. The practice is made up of a broad range of tasks and responsibilities, including the need to develop skills in analysing data, vital problem-solving skills, research skills and knowledge of business systems. Knowledge of software systems is also extremely useful in working efficiently in the Finance sector. Due to the wide range of skills, there are multiple job areas that fall under the Finance sector, including accountancy, business analyst, economist, banker and more (listed below). To enter the finance industry, it is important (and at time necessary) to either have a finance degree or have been in an apprenticeship within the sector. Most finance degrees run between 3 and 4 years in duration, with the additional year often consisting of an industry placement. Finance degrees are offered both as a BSc and as a BA, with lots of students choosing to incorporate other finance related subjects into their educational experience. These subjects are often Finance with Accounting, Business or Economics, known as ‘FAME’.

What can a career in Finance look like?

Studying Finance can not only benefit your life in relation to creating a career path, it can also enable you to build a wealth of knowledge and practical skills that you can use to may your life and the lives of your friends and family better. What will I learn in a Finance Degree?

A Finance degree is formulated to encourage its students to learn and explore the different areas within the sector, building up a strong portfolio of work and knowledge to apply in industry. Courses may vary dependent on the University, with the majority of finance degrees including industry specific modular work. Many Universities will also encourage (or require) their learners to participate in a fourth placement year, where the learner is able to practice their learnt knowledge and apply it in industry under the supervision and support of a team or mentor. This placement year is often undertaken in the third year of the course to enable the student to finish their studies with knowledge of industry practice.

Typical modules include:

+ Accounting

+ Business ethics

+ Business policies

+ Financial management

+ Financial reporting

+ IT for business

+ Macroeconomics

+ Management accounting

Within these modular subject areas, you will be required to write reports and essays on various subjects, attend lectures, seminars and workshops (for an average of 13 hours a week), attend a placement/ participate in industry practice, and analyse data, making reasonable recommendations for hypothetical clients. A Finance degree also means learning and using technology for a substantial proportion, meaning technical software skills using new systems, programmes and data will be taught alongside increasing numerical confidence and ability.

Entry Requirements:

Though most Universities and colleges do not have set entry requirements, the average grade expectations are as listed:

A Levels: Ranging from CCC to AAA grades, most universities will look for an average of BBB to secure a place on a Finance degree course, with an emphasis on a good grade in Mathematics and/or Further Mathematics.

Vocational Courses: Level 3 Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma to Level 6 SCQF qualifications can be accepted by your intended university as an alternative to A Levels, but it is important to make note of the specific requirements of your intended university. Again, it is useful for the BTEC diploma course that you have studied to pertain to the Finance sector in one way or another, but it is dependent on the University.

Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Business, Economics and Statistics college courses can stand out to Universities that offer Finance courses, as your grades can demonstrate a foundation of knowledge which will be greatly beneficial to your Finance higher education progression.

Important skills/ personal attributes:

Those studying to gain a Finance qualification must also develop specific skills that are desired in professionals working in the maths and financial sectors. Realistically, mathematics should be a strength of yours, to a standard where you are comfortable with working sums out, analysing data and coming to strategic outcomes. These skills are then able to be translated into your career in finance, enabling you to work with confidence to find the best outcome financially possible for your client or company. Attention to detail and good organisational skills are also key, as at times in your future career you may be dealing with large sums of money for substantial clientele. It is also important to remember that having friendly and positive communication skills can help you to stand out from the crowd, making you particularly appealing to people who are perhaps struggling financially and are looking for support.
