Farsi Lessons and Tutors in London
Farsi, known outside of Iran as Persian, has an ancient heritage: inscriptions have been discovered that date back to the 5th century BC. Farsi remains the most widely spoken Persian language in existence. Besides being spoken by around 60% of the Iranian population, it is also widely used in Afghanistan, Tajikistan and other Middle Eastern and Persian Gulf countries. In total, approximately 56 million people speak Farsi as their first language currently.
Persian only has two tenses: past and non-past, which includes the present and the future. The Persian alphabet consists of 32 letters – six vowels and 26 consonants – which are taken from Arabic, but the two languages are not similar. There are no other dialects apart from Farsi, making it easier for students, however it is written from right to left which can be confusing for beginners. Some of the world’s oldest literature has been written in the Persian language, so there are many epic and lyrical poems that Farsi students can study.
Learning Farsi gives you access to Iran, which is a key country in the Middle East. With its developing economy, business opportunities are abundant. Iranian culture is characterised by politeness, and business meetings are often only same-sex. Whether visiting Iran for leisure or business, it is important to dress conservatively.
The Oxford Persian Test (OXPET) is a proficiency test that measures listening, reading, writing and speaking. It can be taken online or at test centres in Oxford and Tehran. There is also a GCSE in Persian administered by Edexcel.
