Turkish Tutors & Turkish Lessons

With over 70 million native speakers, Turkish communities are found in several countries besides Turkey proper – notably, Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Cyprus and Greece. An ancient language, the roots of modern Turkish can be traced back nearly 1,300 years to the dialects of the Atlay Mountain Range of Northern Siberia. Over the course of the medieval and early modern periods, the Turkish language continued to evolve as the colonial influence and administrative reach of the Ottoman Empire expanded. By the early 20th century, the Ottoman script was replaced with a Latin alphabet and a drive was initiated to reform and standardise the language. Our Turkish tutors can support your Turkish Language Development.

Although modern Turkish has no noun classes or grammatical gender, its distinctive characteristics are vowel harmony, use of honorifics and extensive agglutination (i.e., the forming of new words by putting together different language particles). Minority languages in Turkey include Kurdish and Arabic.

Known as the gateway between the continents of Europe and Asia, Turkey is a cultural melting pot. Islam is the main religion, with 90% of the population being Sunni Muslims, so it is important to understand Islamic values and customs when researching Turkey. This extends to dressing conservatively and taking off your shoes when you enter a house.

In terms of business, historically Turkey was known for its agriculture. Nowadays however, the nation’s main industries include vehicles, machinery, and textiles, so learning Turkish vocabulary related to these areas will be useful. Turkish business etiquette revolves around hospitality and socialising, and many businesses are family owned.

Cambridge offers an IGCSE in Turkish as a First Language. Alongside this, the Turkish Proficiency Exam (TPE) is ran by the Yunus Emre Institute Exam Centre for both foreign and native speakers. As an internationally recognised standard exam for Turkish, the TPE assesses reading and listening in the first section, writing in the second section, and speaking and free conversation in the final section. Currently the test can only be taken in centres across Europe (including London), and there are plans for it to be made available online. The TPE certificate is valid for 2 years.
