What is the LPC?

The Legal Practice Course (LPC) was designed to train solicitors, focusing on the fundamental elements of practical and paper-work centred work, including creating contracts, working with clients in meetings and working with integrity. It has now since been replaced by the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), with a transition period enabling those in the midst of their LPC studies to finish the course until 2023. To be eligible to take the LPC, candidates must have an undergraduate law degree or have completed the Graduate Diploma in law (GDL), known as a postgraduate course, heavy in workload and intense in its learning-teaching approaches. Our LPC Tutors can support you with your LPC Exam revision and provide you with summaries and condensed revision notes.

What does the LPC assess?

The LPC is comprised of two main stages, with primary subject areas within these parts.

Stage one: Stage one contains three subject practice areas for study, business law and practice, litigation (including civil and criminal) and property law and practice. Skills within these core areas consist of advising and advocacy, interviewing techniques, practical legal knowledge and research and writing and drafting. Professional conduct and regulation, taxation, wills and administration of estate and solicitors accounts are also embedded within stage one study, making the stage comprehensive and work intensive.

Stage two: Stage two contains three vocational practice areas, private acquisitions, public companies and banking. These areas pertain to firm practice, with options for areas relevant in the practice of various firm sizes, including commercial property, family, immigration and welfare law and commercial law.

General study experience on the LPC contains a mixture of learning environments, including workshops with fellow students, lectures and independent study sessions. Oral presentations, coursework and open and closed book assessments encompasses the assessment portion of the course, meaning focusing on your written English is a useful habit to maintain.

How do I prepare for the LPC?

Reviewing and practicing using online practice papers can be beneficial as they enable one to effectively manage time keeping, whilst also adjusting to the wording of questions and the varying levels of difficulty. Self-assessment of your general areas where you could develop your knowledge further will enable you to be self-aware in your studies, supplementing what you need to practice more and strengthening your pre-existing strengths. It is important to remember that the content across the LPC will vary from oral presentations, to written assignments, meaning developing speaking skills, general confidence and presence when communicating with others and focus on English skills imperative to successful study and practice. Ultimately, the more time you spend practicing, the more confident and prepared you are likely to feel when taking your LPC, a feeling which should be reflected in your overall experience and outcome. Online and in-person tutoring can enable you to receive one on one, specially tailored support, enabling you to feel supported in your endeavours and to receive individualised resources and sessions that can develop your knowledge and expand your strengths.
