MRCS

Graduating with a degree in medicine in the UK often does not necessarily mean the end of exams and further study. Many who wish to continue to develop their career with specialist subjects choose to pursue a post-graduate qualification. For those who wish to become surgeons, after graduating they are also required to successfully complete the MRCS exam. This is an examination regulated by The Intercollegiate Committee for Basic Surgical Examinations (ICBSE) on behalf of the four Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Great Britain (of England, Ireland, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The purpose of the exam is to ensure that doctors undergoing surgical training have the sufficient capabilities in order to progress further to a specialist surgical career. Therefore passing the exam is a requirement for anyone wishing to progress to higher surgical training in the UK.

How does the MRCS exam work?

The intercollegiate MRCS exam is divided into 2 parts: Part A which consists of two written examinations and Part B which is a practical exam. In order to participate in the MRCS, candidates must have a medical degree accepted by the UK General Medical Council.

Part A:

  • Two written exams on the same day, first a three-hour exam in the morning which focuses on applied basic sciences followed by a two-hour exam in the afternoon which assesses general surgical principles.
  • Both exams use a multiple choice question format.

Part B:

  • Practical clinical examination sometimes referred to as the OSCE (objective structured clinical exam)
  • Assesses 4 core skills: anatomy and surgical pathology, application of surgical science and critical care, clinical skills and communication competency.
  • The practical exam consists of 18 stations at which candidates have 9 minutes to apply their skills and knowledge of the core skills being tested.
