CFA Level 2 Tutors

CFA Level 2 is the second of three exams in the Chartered Financial Analyst programme. Where Level 1 tests knowledge and comprehension, Level 2 tests your ability to apply that knowledge to real-world investment scenarios. The exam is built around item sets, each presenting a detailed vignette followed by six questions, and it is widely regarded as the most demanding step in the entire programme.

To register for CFA Level 2 you must have passed CFA Level 1. There is no minimum waiting period between levels, and candidates can register for Level 2 as soon as their Level 1 result is confirmed. You must also continue to meet the CFA Institute’s professional conduct requirements.

CFA Level 2 consists of 88 questions across 22 vignettes, divided into two 132-minute sessions of 44 questions each. Every vignette presents a detailed scenario, table, or case study followed by six multiple choice questions. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. Candidates are advised to manage their time carefully across each vignette, as the analytical demands of the format make time pressure one of the most common reasons candidates struggle.

Level 2 covers ten topic areas, each carrying a specific exam weighting:

• Derivatives: 5-10%

Financial Reporting and Analysis, Equity, and Fixed Income carry the highest combined weighting and demand the deepest analytical preparation. Ethics also carries significant weight and is frequently the deciding factor for borderline candidates.

The global pass rate for CFA Level 2 sits at around 45%, but remember this is from a more competitive pool of candidates as each one passed Level 1. Candidates who have passed Level 1 often find Level 2 harder than expected because the vignette format requires a fundamentally different approach. Applying concepts across interconnected questions within a single scenario demands both technical depth and strong exam technique.

CFA Level 2 is offered twice a year, in May and August. Candidates can register and schedule their preferred sitting date through the CFA Institute website, and it is advisable to book your test centre slot early as availability fills quickly around popular sitting dates.

You must bring a valid international travel passport and an approved calculator, either the Texas Instruments BA II Plus or the Hewlett Packard 12C. Results are typically released within 5-7 weeks of the exam date.

Most successful Level 2 candidates begin preparing 4-6 months before their sitting date. Given the added complexity of the vignette format, preparation time should include not just topic study but dedicated practice with full item sets under timed conditions. Candidates who sit Level 2 shortly after passing Level 1 often benefit from the retained knowledge, but should not underestimate the shift in exam technique required.
