Expert ESAT Tuition

The Engineering and Science Admissions Test is required by Cambridge, Imperial College London, and UCL for engineering, physics, natural sciences, and veterinary medicine applicants. Introduced in 2024, it replaced both the ENGAA and NSAA, and consists of three 40-minute modules of 27 multiple choice questions each. Our tutors have deep subject expertise across all five ESAT modules and build every study plan around your specific course requirements, target universities, and exam date.

Access our curated library of ESAT lessons, practice questions and mock exams, each with worked solutions across all five modules, designed to build both the subject knowledge and the speed and accuracy the test demands.

Achieve your target ESAT score

The ESAT is required by the world’s most competitive universities, including Cambridge, Imperial and UCL, making every point on the 1-9 scale count
Cambridge applicants must sit in October with no option to defer, making early and focused preparation essential
The ESAT has limited past paper material given it only launched in 2024, making structured tuition with an expert more valuable than self-study alone
A high ESAT score signals to admissions tutors that you have the mathematical and scientific ability their courses demand from day one
The ESAT tests application of knowledge under strict time pressure, with just 90 seconds per question, meaning speed and accuracy need to be developed through structured timed practice
Scores are reported to your chosen universities automatically, so there is no opportunity to withhold a poor result, making thorough preparation the only reliable strategy

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are your ESAT tutors?

Our tutors are university admissions testing experts, with degrees from leading universities in relevant STEM disciplines, and have direct experience of the admissions process for the courses our students are targeting.

What does your ESAT preparation cover?

We cover every module a student may need: Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. One of the first things we do is confirm exactly which combination applies to your target course, so no preparation time is wasted on the wrong material.

What makes Mayfair's approach different?

Every session is delivered one-to-one and is fully personalised, planned around your specific module combination and adapted as your preparation develops. We begin with an honest assessment of where you are across each relevant module, then build a plan around your timeline and the areas that need the most work. Between sessions, you have access to 24/7 support so questions do not have to wait until the next booking.

How are sessions structured?

Sessions cover examinable material, problem solving skills and extensive exam question practice. That typically involves working through unseen questions in exam conditions, reviewing the reasoning behind incorrect answers, and building the methodical approach that holds up under time pressure.

When should I start?

Test one sitting is in October, and most of our students begin preparation in the spring or early summer, giving enough time to work through the material properly and building exam technique. Whilst we can deliver intensive last minute revision packages, we do encourage earlier preparation, particularly if your subject knowledge in one of the modules is less developed.

How much does ESAT tuition cost?

Tuition fees vary depending on the number of sessions booked, with discounted rates for multi-session bookings or long-term study plans.

Everything You Need to Know About the ESAT

What is the ESAT?

The Engineering and Science Admissions Test is a pre-interview admissions test used by the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL and the University of Oxford (From 2027 entry). It was introduced in 2024, replacing the previous ENGAA and NSAA tests, and is now a required part of the application process for a range of competitive science and engineering courses. The test is designed to assess scientific and mathematical reasoning beyond A-Level, and is sat by thousands of applicants competing for a limited number of places at the UK’s most selective universities.

Who sits the ESAT?

The test is sat by students who require the ESAT for their undergraduate degree programme. Most candidates are studying A-Levels or equivalent qualifications in relevant subjects, though the test is open to international applicants as well. There is no minimum grade requirement to register, and all eligible applicants for the relevant courses are expected to sit it.

Exam format

The ESAT consists of multiple-choice sections, each 40 minutes long and containing 27 questions. Mathematics 1 is compulsory for all candidates. You then sit one or two further subject modules depending on your course requirements. Each question has multiple answer options, and there is no penalty for incorrect answers, so every question should be attempted. The test is computer-based and sat at approved Pearson VUE test centres, with the sitting window in early October each year.

Modules

There are five modules in total. Mathematics 1 covers topics including algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus, and statistics, and is required by all candidates. Mathematics 2 goes further into pure mathematics and is required for some Cambridge courses. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology each cover content broadly in line with A-Level, though the questions place a greater emphasis on applying that knowledge to unfamiliar problems. The combination you need depends on your target course, so preparation should be planned around your specific requirements from the outset.

How is the ESAT scored?

Each correct answer receives one mark, and there is no negative marking. Scores are reported separately for each module, and universities use them alongside other elements of the application, including academic grades, personal statements, and interviews. There is no official pass mark, and score thresholds vary by course and year.

How difficult is the ESAT?

The ESAT is a demanding test. The questions are designed to go beyond straightforward recall of A-Level content, and time pressure is a significant factor. Many strong students find that their existing subject knowledge is not enough on its own, and that targeted preparation makes a meaningful difference to both confidence and performance.

When is the ESAT sat?

There are two sittings each year: one in October and one in January. If you are applying to Cambridge or Oxford, you must sit the October test. The January sitting is available for applicants to Imperial, UCL, and certain other universities. Registration opens in late summer for the October sitting, and candidates must register through the Pearson VUE website. Missing the registration deadline means missing that sitting entirely, so it is important to check the relevant dates well in advance.
