The GMAT Exam

The Graduate Management Admission Test, now delivered as the GMAT Focus Edition, is the leading admissions exam for candidates applying to Master of Business Administration (MBA) and other business related postgraduate programmes worldwide. The exam is designed to assess the analytical, quantitative, verbal, and data interpretation skills that business schools consider essential for success in graduate management study.

The GMAT Focus Edition is trusted by more than 7,700 programmes across 110 countries, making it one of the most widely recognised qualifications for applicants to competitive business schools. With the updated format, the exam is now shorter, more efficient, and more closely aligned with the modern analytical demands of business education.

The GMAT Focus Edition includes three sections:
Quantitative Reasoning
Verbal Reasoning
Data Insights

This revised structure places stronger emphasis on problem solving, critical reasoning, and data literacy, while removing the former Analytical Writing Assessment. Candidates also benefit from enhanced flexibility, including the ability to review and change answers, select the order of exam sections, and receive a clear and intuitive score out of 805.

A strong GMAT score can strengthen applications to top business schools and improve career prospects, as many employers recognise the exam as evidence of analytical aptitude and readiness for rigorous professional roles.

Our GMAT tutors provide tailored, expert support to help you master the new exam format and achieve a competitive score for admission to leading MBA programmes.

What does the GMAT assess?

The GMAT Focus Edition assesses the analytical, quantitative, verbal, and data interpretation skills needed for graduate business study. It contains three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, which measures problem solving and mathematical reasoning; Verbal Reasoning, which evaluates reading comprehension and critical reasoning; and Data Insights, which tests your ability to interpret charts, tables, and multi source data to draw logical conclusions. Each section is 45 minutes long, section adaptive, and taken in an order you choose at the start of the exam. The full test lasts around two hours and fifteen minutes, includes one optional ten minute break, and uses a total score scale from 205 to 805. Candidates may also review and change up to three responses per section, giving greater flexibility and control over pacing and strategy.

What score should I be aiming to achieve?

Business schools use GMAT scores to assess whether a candidate is prepared for the academic demands of their chosen programme. The GMAT Focus Edition now uses a 205 to 805 scoring scale, with higher scores indicating stronger analytical and reasoning ability. Competitive programmes typically look for scores in the upper range, with many top business schools admitting candidates scoring the equivalent of above 685 on the new scale. Elite schools such as Stanford, Wharton and INSEAD attract applicants at the very top of the range, so aiming for a strong percentile score remains essential.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

Effective GMAT preparation involves building strong reasoning skills, practising with official GMAT Focus materials, and working through timed question sets that reflect the exam’s adaptive format. Reviewing Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights topics regularly helps identify areas that need improvement, while full length practice tests develop pacing and confidence. Using official resources from mba.com ensures familiarity with the updated question styles, scoring scale and the Review and Edit feature. Many candidates also benefit from structured one to one tutoring, which provides personalised guidance, targeted practice, and a study plan tailored to their goals and timeline.

How long will it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Most candidates prepare for the GMAT over a period of six to twelve weeks, depending on their target score and familiarity with quantitative, verbal and data analysis skills. Those aiming for top percentile results or applying from non quantitative backgrounds may require three to four months of consistent study. A structured plan with regular practice, timed drills and full length mock exams is the most effective approach, and many candidates choose one to one tutoring to accelerate progress and stay on track.
