Vietnamese Tutors & Vietnamese Lessons
As a member of the Austroasiatic family of languages, Vietnamese vocabulary originated from traditional Chinese characters. An older alphabet derived from Mandarin is called chữ nôm. Following the influence of French on Vietnamese, a modern alphabet was derived and is in use at present called quốc ngữ. This is a Latin-rich alphabet with accents and diacritics, along with the addition of certain letters. Most words are monosyllabic and there are six tones: mid, low-falling, high-rising, low-rising, high-broken and heavy tone. Each of these tones dictate the meaning of a word (as with the neighbouring language of Thai). Our Vietnamese Tutors can guide you through learning the Vietnamese language at all levels including towards the proficiency exams.
Vietnamese known locally as tiếng Việt is spoken in Vietnam and among expat populations especially in the USA, Australia and Europe. There are 75 million native speakers with over half of country aged under 30, this dynamic country is expected to grow along with its language. In Western countries, Vietnam is often only referred to in relation to the Vietnam War. Aside from this, the country has much to offer in its rich cultural history (dating back to the Bronze Age!) and its beautiful natural landscapes which include mountains, beaches, and cities. Due to French colonial rule in the 19th and early 20th centuries, French is the most prominent foreign language in Vietnam, although nowadays under 1% of the Vietnamese population speak French fluently.
The National University of Ho Chi Minh City offers the NLVT test (Năng lực Tiếng Việt) which translates to ‘Vietnamese Language Ability’. Upon completion students receive a Proficiency Certificate which is valid for two years and is widely accepted throughout Vietnam. The test has 6 levels from Elementary to Advanced. The NLVT can also be taken in South Korea and Taiwan.
