What is the TMUA?

The Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) is comprised of two papers, lasting a total of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The TMUA is used by a select 10 UK universities (listed below), with some of these universities affording reduced offers to successful candidates that have shown advanced promise. Most Mathematical courses do not require candidates to sit the test as a compulsory act, however, it is greatly encouraged as it can enable universities to see your potential and measure where your application surpasses other competing candidates’. Testing content is centred around mathematical thinking, using mathematics that candidates will have learned during school studies (primarily at AS level). The TMUA is usually taken by candidates during the Autumn Term, enabling candidates time to review their results and decide whether or not to share them with their university (this is a plus of the TMUA, as you do not have to submit your results if you are unsatisfied with them).

What does the TMUA assess?

The TMUA is based on mathematical thinking and lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes, consisting of 2 papers which are sat consecutively. Using mathematics that candidates will have learnt during their AS level and higher-level GCSE studies, the TMUA is split in two:

Paper 1: Paper one is the Applications of Mathematical Knowledge paper, focusing on the candidate’s ability to consider new, unfamiliar situations and apply mathematical knowledge to said situations. The paper lasts 75 minutes and is made up of 20 multiple-choice questions.

Paper 2: Paper two is the Mathematical Reasoning paper, focusing on the candidate’s ability to comprehend ideas from logic and to provide solutions through applying mathematical reasoning to problems. Like paper 1, paper 2 lasts 75 minutes and is made up of 20 multiple-choice questions.

Computer-based, the test does not allow calculators or dictionaries to be used in the test.

What score should I be aiming to achieve?

The TMUA is scored using the data from both papers, delivered using a scale ranging from 1.0 to 9.0, with 1.0 being the lowest and 9.0 the highest. The test will deliver scored results from 1.0 to 9.0 separately for each paper as well as your final score, but this is for the candidate’s knowledge, not a part of a formal result. There is no pass or fail score on the TMUA and candidates received numbered scores based on the number of questions they answer correctly, with no implementation of negative marking.

How do I prepare for the TMUA?

Reviewing and practicing using online past papers can be beneficial as they enable one to effectively manage time keeping, whilst also adjusting to the wording of questions and the varying levels of difficulty. Self-assessment of your general areas where you could develop your knowledge further will enable you to be self-aware in your studies, supplementing what you need to practice more and strengthening your pre-existing strengths. Reviewing Cambridge Assessment’s TMUA resources and content windows will enable you to narrow down your revision to a refined and purposeful selection of materials. It is important to remember that the content in the TMUA will consist of mathematics that you will have already learnt at GCSE and AS Level, making test format prep and revision of past lessons a vital step in successfully preparing. Ultimately, the more time you spend practicing, the more confident and prepared you are likely to feel when taking your TMUA, a feeling which should be reflected in your score outcome. Online and in-person tutoring can enable you to receive one on one, specially tailored support, enabling you to feel supported in your endeavours and to receive individualised resources and sessions that can develop your knowledge and expand your strengths.
