BMAT, The Biomedical Admissions Test is used by University admissions offices to discern the most able and suitable candidates for courses in the medical sector. What does the BMAT assess?

The BMAT lasts 2 hours in total and is divided into 3 separate sections.

Section 1: The Aptitude and Skills section of the BMAT consists of 35 multiple-choice questions, with 60 minutes allocated for these questions to be completed. Testing candidate’s ability to apply problem solving skills to questions regarding data, statistics and mathematical/ scientific context, section 1 requires candidates to comprehend arguments and come to conclusions using numerical information.

Section 2: The Scientific Knowledge section of the BMAT consists of 27 multiple-choice questions, with 30 minutes allocated for these questions to be completed. Testing candidate’s ability to retain scientific and mathematical knowledge previously learnt, this section requires candidates to use this subject-based knowledge to come to reasonable conclusions.

Section 3: The Essay Writing section of the BMAT consists of a singular writing task, with a selection of 3 questions, with 30 minutes allocated for these questions to be completed. Testing candidate’s ability to communicate ideas and knowledge through effective application of the Written English, this section requires candidates to organise their thoughts and communicate their ideas clearly.

  

What BMAT score should I be aiming to achieve?

The BMAT is scored on a scale as opposed to a sum of the points achieved throughout the sections in the test. A maximum of 32 points can be attained in Section 1 and a further maximum of 27 in Section 2. Your BMAT score will be recorded on a scale ranging from 1.0 to 9.0. Section 3 is scored between 1 and, marked in accordance with the quality of the content and graded A, C, or E for your English skills. This is marked by two examiners, with your score averaged between the two examiners marks. The average BMAT score sits around 5.0, with good BMAT scores excelling 6.0 and above, with 7.0 and above viewed as rare.
