Swedish Tutors & Swedish Lessons
Swedish, a Germanic language and descended from Old Norse, is spoken by over 9 million people worldwide. The Swedish language is closely related to Norwegian and Danish and speakers of either language are able to understand each other. Among the Scandinavian languages, Swedish is the most widely spoken. The Swedish alphabet follows the Latin script with the addition of three letters: Ö, Ä and Å. An interesting word in Swedish is ‘Världsschlager’, which has long fascinated linguists as it has 8 consonants in a row! Our Swedish Tutors can help you learn this Scandinavian Language at all levels.
Culturally, Sweden celebrates the national holidays of Kräftskiva (Crayfish Party), Fettisdagen (Shrove Tuesday) and Midsommar Eve, which is held on the longest day of the year. The country is also known as the pop music capital of the world, so there’s plenty of Swedish pop music you can listen to for language acquisition. Sweden’s economy is based on the transport and telecommunications industries, and business meetings often involve ‘fika’, which is a workplace tradition of eating and drinking together that happens twice a day.
TISUS is the Test in Swedish for Academic Studies for anyone planning to study in Sweden. It is administered twice a year by the Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism at Stockholm University at centres across Sweden, though it is possible to take the test outside of Sweden. TISUS covers speaking, writing and reading, and you must already speak Swedish to a secondary school level, so prior Swedish lessons are advantageous.
