Frequently Asked Questions

Who are your CFA Level 3 tutors?

All our tutors are CFA Charterholders with active careers in portfolio management, wealth management, and investment strategy. They have passed all three levels on their first attempt and bring direct experience of the constructed response format, including how answers are marked and where candidates most commonly lose points.

What topics are covered at CFA Level 3?

CFA Level 3 covers portfolio management and wealth planning, asset allocation, risk management, behavioural finance, derivatives, fixed income, equity, and ethics. The portfolio management and wealth planning topics carry the highest combined weighting and form the core focus of our tuition.

What makes Mayfair's CFA Level 3 tuition different?

Level 3 requires a fundamentally different approach to the earlier levels, and the constructed response component is where most candidates need the most work. Our sessions focus heavily on written answer technique, teaching you to structure responses clearly, use precise investment language, and deliver the specific points the marking scheme rewards.

How are Level 3 sessions structured?

Sessions are one-to-one and combine curriculum teaching with extensive practice across both multiple-choice and written question formats. Your tutor will work through constructed response questions with you, provide detailed written feedback on your answers, and run item set practice to ensure consistent performance across both papers.

Do you offer online or in-person lessons?

Tuition is available in-person or online, with tutors covering all major time zones.

What is your CFA Level 3 pass rate?

Over 86% of our CFA Level 3 candidates pass their exam, supported by structured preparation, constructed response practice, and timed mock assessments replicating both the written and item set papers.

How long before the exam should I start?

Most Level 3 candidates begin tuition 4-6 months before their sitting date. Given the added demands of the constructed response format, preparation should include significant time practising written answers under timed conditions. We also offer specialised programmes for last minute revision support, and resits.

How much does CFA Level 3 tuition cost?

Fees vary depending on the number of sessions booked, with discounted rates available for multi-session packages and full study plans covering the entire Level 3 curriculum.

Everything You Need to Know About CFA Level 3

What is CFA Level 3?

CFA Level 3 is the final exam in the Chartered Financial Analyst programme and the last step before earning the full charter. Where Levels 1 and 2 focus on financial knowledge and applied analysis, Level 3 focuses on portfolio management, wealth planning, and the ability to construct and justify investment decisions. It is the only level with a written component, making exam technique as important as technical knowledge.

Who can sit CFA Level 3?

To register for CFA Level 3 you must have passed CFA Level 2. There is no minimum waiting period between levels, and candidates can register as soon as their Level 2 result is confirmed. You must also continue to meet the CFA Institute’s professional conduct requirements. To receive the full charter after passing Level 3, candidates must also complete 4,000 hours of relevant professional experience.

Level 3 exam format

CFA Level 3 consists of two 132-minute sessions. The morning session is constructed response, presenting a series of investment scenarios that require written answers. The afternoon session is item set based, following the same vignette format as Level 2. There is no penalty for incorrect answers in the item set session. Time management across both papers is critical, and the written session in particular requires candidates to be concise, precise, and structured under pressure.

Topic areas and weightings

Level 3 covers the following topic areas:

  • Portfolio Management and Wealth Planning: 35-40%
  • Ethics and Professional Standards: 10-15%
  • Fixed Income: 15-20%
  • Equity: 10-15%
  • Alternative Investments: 5-10%
  • Derivatives: 5-10%

Portfolio Management and Wealth Planning carries by far the highest weighting and is the defining focus of the Level 3 curriculum. Ethics also carries significant weight and has historically been a deciding factor for borderline candidates.

What is the CFA Level 3 constructed response section?

The constructed response section of CFA Level 3 is the component that most distinguishes it from the earlier levels. Candidates are presented with a series of investment scenarios and asked to provide written answers, typically recommending, justifying, or evaluating investment decisions based on the information given. There are no multiple choice options to guide you, and answers must be written clearly, concisely, and in the specific format the marking scheme rewards.

The most common mistake candidates make is writing too much. The marking scheme allocates a fixed number of points per question, and answers are marked on whether they hit the required points, not on the length or sophistication of the response. A candidate who writes three precise sentences covering the correct points will outscore one who writes three paragraphs that bury the relevant content.

Practising constructed response questions with a CFA charterholder who can review your answers and identify exactly where you are and are not scoring marks is widely regarded as the most effective preparation for this section, and it is a core part of how we prepare Level 3 candidates at Mayfair.

How difficult is CFA Level 3?

The global pass rate for CFA Level 3 sits at around 48%, but candidates arrive at this stage having already passed two demanding exams, making it a highly competitive pool. The constructed response format is the primary challenge. Many technically strong candidates underperform in the written session because they have not practised structuring answers to the standard the marking scheme requires. Both the content and the format demand dedicated preparation.

When can I sit CFA Level 3?

CFA Level 3 is offered twice a year, in February and August. Candidates can register and book their preferred sitting date through the CFA Institute website, and it is advisable to book your test centre slot early as availability fills quickly around popular dates.

What do I need on exam day?

You must bring a valid international travel passport and an approved calculator, either the Texas Instruments BA II Plus or the Hewlett Packard 12C. Results are typically released within 5-7 weeks of the exam date.

When should I start preparing?

Most successful Level 3 candidates begin preparing 4-6 months before their sitting date. A significant portion of that time should be dedicated to practising constructed response answers under timed conditions, as this is the component that most commonly determines the outcome. Starting early also gives you time to cover the full portfolio management curriculum, which is substantially broader and deeper than at the earlier levels.
