Choice of subjects

The IB International Baccalaureate Diploma offers an internationally respected curriculum made up of six subject groups and a programme core.

The programme core strives to make the most of the IB educational experience by giving students the change to apply their knowledge and skills outside of the classroom. It includes the following modules:

  • Theory of Knowledge, also known as ToK, is a mandatory course where students analyse knowledge itself, how people learn, and everything that is behind a knowledge claim. Inspired by epistemological philosophy, this course gives students the opportunity to reflect on the knowledge they acquire through their classes. It is assessed by a 1600 word essay and an oral presentation.
  • CAS – Creativity, Action, Service – requires students to participate in activities and experiences outside of the classroom. Its aims is for students to challenge themselves in the ‘real world’ through purposeful experiences that have tangible outcomes. CAS activities range from volunteering, to artistic performances, sports, and many other extracurricular events that are beneficial for the student and their community.
  • The Extended Essay offers students the opportunity to produce their first piece of independent research through a 4000 word-long paper. This module gives the student essential skills in citation, writing and researching that will be crucial for their undergraduate studies. It also lets the student focus on an topic they find interesting and develop extensive knowledge on it.

The six subject groups, on the other hand, look to provide the student with a well-rounded, liberal arts education that covers many important academic fields. The student chooses a subject from each group so they can follow their particular interests while still covering all fields. Students take three subjects in High Level and three in Standard Level. The former having more challenging assignments and a deeper curriculum, and the latter being less time intensive, while still very comprehensive.

The six Subject Groups include:

  • Language and literature A
  • Foreign language acquisition, which give students the option of learning a new language or continuing previous learning.
  • Humanities and social sciences
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • The arts
